TIPS FOR SAND, SAFETY AND ADVENTURE

There’s nothing quite like waking up to the sound of waves rolling onto the shore, sliding open the door of your van, and stepping straight onto the sand. For many Australian travellers, beach driving is one of the biggest reasons to build a capable touring van in the first place.

At Summit Vans, we build Mercedes Sprinter vans designed for adventure — and that includes tackling Australia’s incredible coastal tracks and beach camps with confidence. But driving on sand is very different from driving on sealed roads, and knowing the basics can make the difference between a smooth day on the beach and spending hours digging yourself out.

Here’s what every Sprinter van owner should know before heading onto the sand.

Why Sprinter Vans Are Surprisingly Capable on Sand

Mercedes Sprinter vans have become one of the most popular platforms for off-grid touring thanks to their comfort, storage capacity, and long-distance capability. With the right setup, they can also perform exceptionally well on beaches and sandy tracks.

Key factors that help include:

Long wheelbase stability
Strong turbo-diesel torque delivery
Advanced traction control systems
Available AWD and 4x4 drivetrains
High carrying capacity for extended touring

However, Sprinter vans are also heavier than most traditional 4WDs, which means tyre pressure and momentum become even more important when driving on soft sand.

Tyre Pressure: The Most Important Beach Driving Tip

If there’s one rule every beach driver should know, it’s this:

Lower your tyre pressures before hitting the sand.

Reducing tyre pressure increases the tyre’s footprint, allowing the van to “float” on top of the sand instead of digging in.

For most Sprinter vans, a good starting point is:

18–25 PSI for general beach driving
Lower pressures for very soft sand
Slightly higher pressures for firmer sand or heavily loaded vans

Every setup is different depending on vehicle weight, tyre size, and beach conditions, so it’s important to adjust accordingly.

Trying to drive soft sand at full highway pressures is one of the fastest ways to get bogged.

Fast Deflation Makes a Huge Difference

One thing experienced beach drivers quickly learn is that airing down tyres can become a chore — especially when you’re stopping regularly between highway and sand sections.

That’s why many touring setups now use rapid deflation systems like the APEX quick deflator valves available through Summit Vans.

The APEX valve systems are designed to dramatically speed up the process of lowering tyre pressures, allowing drivers to air down in seconds rather than several minutes per tyre. According to Apex Designs, some systems can reduce a tyre from highway pressures to off-road pressures in under 15 seconds.

For beach touring, that convenience makes a real difference — especially when travelling in changing conditions or convoying with other vehicles.

SHOULD YOU TURN ESP OFF ON SAND?

Yes — in many cases, you should.

Mercedes Sprinter vans are equipped with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which is excellent for highway safety but can become frustrating in soft sand.

On loose surfaces, ESP may:

Cut engine power
Apply braking unexpectedly
Reduce wheelspin when you actually need momentum

When driving on soft sand, many Sprinter owners temporarily disable or reduce ESP intervention to maintain steady momentum and prevent the van from bogging down.

That said:

Always follow Mercedes-Benz recommendations for your specific model
Re-enable ESP when returning to normal roads
Avoid excessive speed or aggressive steering inputs

Momentum is your friend on sand — sudden braking or stopping is not.

Smooth Driving Beats Aggressive Driving

The key to beach driving success isn’t horsepower — it’s smoothness.

When driving your Sprinter on sand:

Maintain steady momentum
Avoid sudden braking
Take wide, gentle turns
Stay in existing wheel tracks where possible
Avoid sharp acceleration
Use low-range gearing if equipped

A heavy van that loses momentum can sink quickly into soft sand, particularly on uphill exits or churned-up access tracks.

RECOVERY GEAR EVERY VAN SHOULD CARRY

Even experienced drivers get stuck occasionally. Beach conditions can change daily depending on tides, weather, and traffic.

At a minimum, carry:

Recovery boards
Rated recovery points
Snatch strap
Air compressor
Tyre pressure gauge
Shovel

And always check local tide times before driving onto the beach.

Best Beach Driving Destinations in Australia

Australia has some of the best beach driving destinations in the world, and many are perfectly suited to van-based adventures.

K'gari (Fraser Island)

Probably Australia’s most iconic beach driving destination. Endless sand tracks, freshwater lakes, and remote camping make it a bucket-list trip for any touring van owner.

Stockton Beach

Famous for its huge dunes and relatively easy access from Newcastle, Stockton is ideal for a quick weekend test of your beach-driving setup.

Moreton Island

Crystal-clear water, beach camping, and scenic inland tracks make Moreton a fantastic coastal touring destination.

Robe

The Robe to Beachport run is one of South Australia’s classic sand-driving routes, combining coastal scenery with challenging dune sections.

Cable Beach

One of the country’s most famous beaches, offering spectacular sunsets and long stretches of firm sand ideal for relaxed cruising.

Built for Adventure

Beach driving opens up some of the most spectacular camping and touring experiences Australia has to offer. With the right tyre pressures, proper recovery gear, and a well-prepared Sprinter van, you’ll be able to confidently explore coastlines that most travellers never reach.

Whether you’re planning weekend escapes or full-time touring, Summit Vans builds Sprinter van fit-outs designed for real Australian adventures — from remote inland tracks to sandy coastal campsites.
